He Da Man...He My Man

The last time we saw My Man and this box was Father's Day...
My sweet date of the last forty plus years has been putting his Father's Day gift to good use! We are remodeling our master bedroom and bath. I say we but it is more he. I am the designer...the paint swatch chooser...the woman with the prerogative to decide the paint color on the entire wall is just not what I thought it was going to look like...! 'He' is the man of action...the talented carpenter, the wielder of sheet rock finishing mud and mutterer of a thousand words under his breath. He 'Da Man'! He My man! And this is what 'Da Man' has been doing in our emptied out master bedroom...
According to 'Da Man', this saw cuts like butter and is a real jewel. Wood trim is putty in his hands...now that's a mixed metaphor if ever I wrote one.
When walls aren't plumb as they used to be...some things still have to be 'coped'.
If only the knees were as young as his heart...
It would make getting out of the corner so much easier...
'Da Man' went from using his saw for cutting new base boards to using it for cutting  crown molding...
Now back to my duties...my obligation. Never one to shirk a challenge, I will be out and about seeking those finishing touches that don't require putty knives and trowels. See y'all there?

If Ever I Cease To Love

Six years ago this day changed my world. An ill wind named Katrina blew into New Orleans and forever altered the lives of too many. I keep thinking I will one day be able to look at this day and it will be simply a bad memory. Not yet. It is still very raw and real and alive.

The levees failed in more than one spot in New Orleans. Lives were drowned, altered and forever changed. I chronicled that day in depth here. I won't rehash the sad story again. It doesn't help to retell the tale. Katrina changed my life...but life goes on. Today I wear my heart on my sleeve and a fleur de lis around my neck. I miss my parents, but I'm so grateful they won't have to relive that experience every year.

"If Ever I Cease To Love" is the theme song for the Rex carnival organization. It is a song that is played at one time or another during a carnival ball. It is silly and nonsensical but it makes me happy. It reminds me of the carefree times in New Orleans pre-Katrina. Of carnival balls and dancing until the break of dawn... Here are a few of the lines penned by the heavyweight musical genius that also composed "The Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze", George Leybourne. I'll hum this tune today to keep me remembering the happy times, the good times growing up in 'The City That Care Forgot'! It's called If Ever I Cease To Love, and the chorus is silly, the verses non-sensical. So if anyone else is feeling a bit sad today hum this little ditty and remember that Love is what makes the world a better place.

If Ever I Cease To Love

In a house, in a square, in a quadrant,
In a street, in a lane, in a road.
Turn to the left, on the right hand,
you see my true love's abode.
I go there a courting, and cooing to my love like a dove,
And swearing on my bend-ed knee
If ever I cease to love,
May sheepsheads grow on apple trees,
If ever I cease to love.
If ever I cease to love,
If ever I cease to love
May the moon be turned to green cream cheese,
If ever I cease to love

She can sing, she can play on the piano,
She can jump, she can dance, she can run.
For she's a wonderful girlie,
She's all of them rolled into one.
I adore her beauty, she's like an angel dropped from above
If ever I cease to love,
May the fish get legs, and the cows lay eggs,
If I ever cease to love,

If I ever cease to love
May we all turn into cats and dogs, If I ever cease to love

Below is a version I found on You Tube of the song. It shows the seals of many of the carnival organizations displayed on the lakefront at the Mardi Gras Fountain. It is typically played at a faster, 'jazzier'  pace at the balls to encourage a merrier mood!

To all my loved ones...today let's remember how important it is to never cease to love and live joyously!

You Were First...

Oh my dear Trey...you were the first to introduce me to the wonderful joys of being a Grandmother! You captured my heart first...what joy just seeing your smiling, handsome face brings to my heart! Seven, yes, SEVEN wonderful years since we first met. I am so blessed.
We enjoyed a delightful party at your house yesterday! This year you and Lily celebrated your birthdays that follow each other at your house! Mom and Dad had a wonderful back yard BBQ planned. Mother Nature decided to make your Lucky Seven birthday even more remarkable...she sent Hurricane Irene to mark the day! No worries, Irene was just huffing and puffing gently near your house and we had a gentle rain that didn't keep anyone from being in the party mood! The grill was sending out a delicious smoky scent into the drizzly air...
And your Dad had lots of siblings and Pop on hand to help...
Inside Mom had set the scene for a lovely party...

Plates of cupcakes for you and Lily...chocolate for you and pink for Lily...umm, mmm!
We ate a great meal...and then it was on to the main event...Presents!
You climbed up on your birthday seat and started to unwrap...
What did you get, Trey?
So many fun gifts...

And Uncle Dan and Aunt Laura scored a big surprise with this gift...Whoa!
Happy Birthday was sung...you...
and Lily...blew out your candles, and then everyone was up and....

outside to see just what Uncle Dan and Aunt Laura's gift does...Uncle Dan sets it up...
You and Peter are ready to rock and roll...
Wow!
I think you had a winner there, Trey...Uncle Tim raised the 'roof' when he raised the gun...
I think I know what to get Uncle Dan for his birthday...
Trey, you and Peter hold down the fort...Peter's the next birthday on the grandchild list...
I'll be your party hearty pal anytime...you started early finessing your party moves...
So, seven years,  Lucky 7 years later and you're still going strong! My Cool Birthday Boy!
You were the first grandchild and you've led me right down the road to joy and happiness...I love being a grandmother...I love being YOUR grandmother...Happy Birthday and...

You know something Miss Lilly...I have noticed you love to wear big girls shoes...
So many shoes...so little time...
But I have faith in you...
But I digress...we all went to see you baptized...you were very well behaved!
and looked very beautiful..
and before we knew it we were ready for the beach again...You, Dad and Mom last summer...
This summer is was just you and Mom...you have been doing a lot of growing...
You discovered Uncle Dan's surfboard...
and were ready to take over as the new Gidget!
Hang Ten, Lily!
OH yes, we saw you!
and you were very good about washing all those sandy toes...
And now we are ready to have another birthday party for our Lily! You are TWO TODAY....what do you think about that Lily?
