That was funny and helpful :)
I use it multiple times every day. If I knew who the chief of grammar police was, I'd lobby to have y'all officially added as the newest pronoun.
Brilliant and gave me a smile today, even though it was a tired smile!! Well, at least I shall know the form now when I come a-visiting!!
Mrs. Shady's sister and her family live in 'Bama and when they come to visit they use the "Y" word a lot. They also use the word "babe" as a generic 'fits all" nickname. They call me and everybody else "babe." When it's time for them to leave and go back home I always give them what I think is a proper send-off: "Y'all come back now, hear?" (Why do I get nothing but blank stares? Should I have said "All Y'all"? )
Very helpful information. WE lived in NC for such a short time that the southern language wasn't ingrained into me. Once in a while I'll say y'all, but it doesn't sound as good with a northern accent. I resort back to "you guys".
I've got it! Finally! Thanks for the lesson.
Very funny! I absolutely loved this post. :)
This sure made me smile. I'm a Northerner (ex-New Yorker) married to a down home Southern boy (Texan).Karen
Yep. But when you're talking about the folks at your mother's house it's --I'm going to see mama-n-'em.R
Dearst Sush,Oh, it made me think for a while as not being English speaking person p;)I will guess;Only for one person "you"More than 2 people to 4 people "Y'all"more than 5 people "All Y'all" in Sothern part of America.Haha, I hope I got it right (^^;)Love you always, xoxo Miyako*
Most enlightening. Thanks for sharing. ;-)
After living in NC for 4 years, I still wasn't sure when All Y'all was appropriate. Thanks for clearing it up :)
Living in Los Angeles provides many funny looks when I say, "y'all." But it's something I'll never stop saying!
Y'all know that is the truth down here - don't yah? sandie
